The Commissioner has responded to the Ministry of Justice’s consultation on the Victims’ Code.
The Code sets out what victims can expect to receive from criminal justice agencies. It provides an important baseline for how the criminal justice system can support victims to engage with the criminal justice process if they choose to do so.
The consultation sought views on:
– Introducing new principles and training to ensure agencies properly assess and meet victims’ needs.
– Creating a clearer framework for engaging directly with child victims.
– Identifying the most appropriate points to communicate case information to victims.
– Improving when and how victims are enabled to participate in the process.
